It focuses on working to empower women in the community and to create and sell artisan products made from local materials.
Visit our first Caring for Destination project developed with Art Lodge and the Isla Gobernadora community.
A local initiative led by the Art Lodge, a privately owned artist retreat located on Isla Gobernadora just off Panama's Pacific Coast, has created burgeoning artisans from the local community. Traditionally, the local populace has subsisted from fishing and slash-and-burn agriculture. The folks at the Art Lodge are assisting the women of the area to craft unique pieces from their local environment. The sales of the creations are generating an alternative form of income for the island from the growing tourism interest in the area and the nation.
www.panamacity-hotels.travel supports the empowerment of women. For each package sold, a percentage of the revenue will be used to support further development of the small enterprise and to begin a new nursery project to re-institute pre-Colombian forms of agro-forestry. This percentage will be matched by the hotel owner and combined with funds from other sources.
Originally from France, the founders and owners, Valerie and Yves have been living in the Caribbean and Central America for many years and bring their European hospitality while also showing their commitment to sustainable tourism and supporting the community. Being the first tourism operator on Gobernadora Island, Art Lodge plays a key role in helping the local population determine the kind of tourism wanted in their destination. They are involved with the community in many ways - hoping to create a bond that not just sensibleness people living in the area about tourism but also finding ways for them to become directly involved and take a stake in nurturing it and protecting the environment that supports it.
