Founders and Owners
In early 2004, Ivan and Gladys Ortiz participated in a USAID/AED Sustainable Eco-Tourism project in the protected Panama Canal Watershed areas. The project aimed to preserve and promote eco-tourism, nature observation and birding as well at create economic opportunities around nearby Soberania National Park. In addition to USAID/AED, the project was sponsored by the University of Panama, the Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Smithsonian Institution and Colorado State University. In October 2005, after an intensive training, Ivan and Gladys became certified Birding and Eco-Tourism Guides and decided to create a bed & breakfast. In late 2005, Ivan's Bed and Breakfast opened with one room. It now has a total of 4 rooms having hosted visitors, researchers, birders, and nature enthusiasts from Europe, Canada, USA, South America, and Asia.
Ivan and Gladys are a very hospitable Panamanian couple dedicated to tourism and both share the responsibilities of taking care of their guests. The family with two lovely children is extremely friendly, but not obtrusive, if you prefer your privacy.
Ivan is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the surrounding wildlife and can take you out himself in his boat or on a guided walk. He can also arrange the perfect guide to cater to your specific interests be it a special bird or a rare animal.
Gladys is an excellent cook and gracious host. She prepares all the meals inviting you to experience truly authentic Panamanian cuisine.
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
To reduce and minimize environmental impact, guests are encouraged to walk instead of using motorized vehicles and to be conscious of their energy use during their stay. Electric golf carts and bicycles are available for rent and the owner's personal vehicle operates on Propane Gas. Energy-saving lamps are used where possible. Power-saving air-conditioners and electric water heaters are time-controlled, and guests are encouraged to turn off appliances and lights when not in use.
Ivan and Gladys actively support the indigenous communities settled on Chagres and Gatun Rivers, assisting them to preserve their arts and craft traditions. They bring visitors to their communities to learn about their culture, way of living, history, and dances. Currently, these communities depend heavily on tourism and they no longer depend on their traditional customs for survival because of being located in the Chagres National Park.
Traditional houses like these, made out of over-80-year-old timbers, are becoming rarer and rarer. By creating a bed and breakfast lodge, Ivan and Gladys are preserving a piece of history. By staying here and visiting the surrounding areas, you can also help to preserve its history.
